10 SMARTER WAYS TO PUT ON MAKEUP
If there's one thing we've learned about makeup it's that there's more than one way to make it look HOT. Toe-may-toe. Toe-mah-toe. Right? Case in point: we interviewed a handful of top makeup artists for these ten genius (andcompletely different) ways to apply your makeup. Poe-tay-toe. Poe-tah-toe.
#1 Tap on mascara
According to makeup artist Stephen Sollitto, who works with celebs Hailee Steinfeld, Amy Adams and Emily Deschanel, long strokes of mascara aren’t actually the best way to amp up your lashes. “I like tapping deep at the base of the lashes, working outwards to the tips. That way you’re creating depth—the roots are dark and rich and the ends are soft, not clumpy,” he says.
#2 Soften pencils
Lip liner tends to be dry, which results in uneven coverage. Kayleen McAdams, actress Rachel McAdams’s sister and makeup artist, suggests dipping the pencil in sheer balm before applying. “It glides on much smoother, making it easier to accurately fill your lips,” she says. Warm the tip of a stubborn eyeliner pencil between your thumb and forefinger for a similar effect.
#3 Master the art of stippling
Stippling is an artist’s word for shading with dots instead of solid strokes. (Think Seurat.) However, techniques of the old masters can work for you too. “Stippling your foundation creates the most natural finish,” says Sollitto. The technique also works for blush—build color at the apple of your cheeks, dotting back towards your hairline.
#4 Fight grease with gel, not powder
A dusting of powder is an intuitive way to blot away grease—but it can also dull your complexion. Sollitto likes finishing the face with a dab of mattifying gel along the T-Zone and under the eyes. “This ensures you’re not shiny in photoslater,” he says.
#5 Give your lips the middle finger
According to Sollitto, a smudge of lipstick on your middle finger is the best way to give your lips that perfect heart-shaped pout. “Put a dab on your middle finger and place it in the center of your upper lip, sweeping outwards to the left. Repeat towards the right,” he says. “There’s just something about the feeling of it and the way you will move your head that creates that perfect lipstick line.”
#6 Repurpose your lipstick
A smidge of peach or coral lipstick blended in with your concealer is an unexpected antidote to dark under eye circles. “The orangey red shade brightens and diffuses the darkness,” says makeup artist Robin Black, who works with Bryce Dallas Howard, Cindy Crawford and Demi Moore. Sollitto tells his clients to smudge whatever lipstick their wearing on cheeks and lids before stepping out the door. “That way, there’s a continuity of color on the face,” he explains.
#7 Line your lashes
The key to lush, thick lashes isn’t just in your mascara’s formulation. A steady stroke of ultra-thin gel liner along the base of your lash line is key to creating the illusion of extra lashes. “You want to fill that spot between your lashes and your lid,” advises Black. “Only when that line looks solid should you start applying mascara.”
#8 Clean up with foundation
For simple smudges of liner or errant swipes of mascara, eye makeup remover can whisk away more than you intend. A foundation dipped Q-Tip will wipe away any mistake—use a tapping motion to get the best results.
#9 Crimp in falsies
When it comes to false lashes, an eyelash curler is your best friend. After placing full strips or individual clusters and allowing them to dry, apply a few coats of mascara. Then crimp gently with an eyelash curler, rocking the device back and forth while you clamp. That way, your faux hairs will blend in seamlessly with your real lashes.
#10 Contour with highlighter
Luminizing highlighter can make your cheekbones pop—but not when applied directly to them. Instead, smooth highlighter in a C-shape starting at your temples and extending along the bone just below your eyes. A slim line of highlighter down the center of your nose can also create the illusion of straighter bone structure.

Your hairstyle should have a narrowing effect, so try to spike your short hair up while maintaining it straightened and close to the scalp on the sides. Women with curly hair should avoid short hairstyles as they will not be able to benefit from the desired effect.

Medium hair
Medium hairstyles look gorgeous with straight as well as curly hair. Women with straight hair can opt for a blunt cut bob hairstyle as this will help adding length to balance the roundness of the facial features.
Curly hairstyles usually emphasize width and this is exactly what round face shapes don't need. Try to thin out your curls to minimize the hair volume which will emphasize the roundness of your face. Allow your curly hair to fall loosely and choose long side swept bangs to add a bit of twist to your gorgeous hair.

Round face shapes and long hair complement each other perfectly as the hair's length balances the roundness by adding a lengthening effect. Blunt cut long straight hairstyles look absolutely stunning and match round face shapes beautifully. Gentle layers can benefit this type of hairstyle as the hairstyle will be able to set better in place without emphasizing width hair volume.
Curly hairstyles look gorgeous if the right type of layering is performed to thin out the hair and allow it to set in place without adding too much width. Choose long curls as well as wavy or vintage styles and you will look beautiful.

If you have good brows, with a nice shape and a decent amount of hair, take your mascara and gently brush it on them in the opposite direction of the hair growth. Once it's dry gently brush ot back and shape them with a brow brush or an old mascara brush. If you have no hairs or very light hair draw your brows on by slowly building them up in an arch which starts and ends on either side of the eye... making the brows just slightly longer than the eyes. - 5
Apply the eyeliner from the outside of the eye in, using smooth motions and having the line sweep up, slightly, to make a little cat's eye effect. Do a similar line on the bottom, only smaller and shorter, stopping at the middle of the eye. Don't forget your mascara! To make a nice coat make little "s"'s as you pull up, thus coating the left and right side of the lashes and separating them. - 6
- 7
(Optional) If you have a short nose or chin or a very small nose etc. you can use a lighter concealer or powder to lengthen or accentuate areas.I once read that a woman's under eye concealer should be one shade lighter than the rest of her face, thus brightening the eyes. I like this effect usually, but it doesn't work well if one hasn't used foundation.Play with these two contouring powders, (the dark and light), and see what works on you! Either way you'll probably want to do a little under-eye concealing now, to clean up an eyeshadow that might have dropped below the eyes etc.. - 8
Find a blush that's within your natural skin color range and suck in your cheeks. Apply it in the recessed cheek area lightly. If you have a lighter blush, (or, if I am wearing coppery eyeshadow I will often use the same shadow), smile and powder some on the "apples" of your cheeks for effect.Use what's left on the brush to *very* lightly brush your nose, forehead and chin to make a healthy glow! - 9
Complete the look with a hairstyle that draws the eye up to the crown of the head, to make the face look longer. I will provide a few examples below and will look into writing a whole how-to when I get a chance.Tips & Warnings
- If you have dry skin make sure to use oil-based moisturizers and foundations if possible, especially in the winter!
- If you have oily skin: in the winter try using a light, oil based moisturizer with a water based foundation or mineral powder. In the summer switch to a water based moisturizer and mineral powder.
- Make your eyebrows start just outside the eye corners, so they extend slightly more on either end then the eyes. Trim or wax them in an upward line to raise the brows while thinning them.
- If you have dark hair that shows on your face try removing it with either wax or a facial hair remover, (similar to Nair). Be cautious with the latter, though, as it can be rough on skin and it can also smell. As with tweezing of the eyebrows, remove hair the night before if possible.
- Another option for dark facial hair is a hair lightening cream. I have never tried one of these, personally, but I have seen them for sale multiple places.
- Choose which you want to accentuate each makeup session, the eyes or lips. Make one natural and barely noticeable and the other more exciting and you will achieve maximum "wow!"
- If your eyes have any overhang or are small do not use liner or makeup all the way around them, this effect will make them looked closed and even smaller. Try multiple lining types and see what looks good on you!
- avoid anything contaning mineral oil or alcohol if possible. Mineral oil can clog pores and alcohol can overdry skin, thus making it produce MORE oil.
- Tweeze or wax your eyebrows the night before a makeup application, if possible, to avoid redness showing through or having your makeup clog the newly opened pores.
- When applying moisturizers, foundations etc. do NOT pull on the skin! This is especially important around the eye areas as this can damage the skin and also cause wrinkles.
